KARAN CASTE IN ORISSA

When I was in Utkal University,Orissa, I got confused by their caste system. They have a new caste called Karana.
Who are these Karana people ???
According to the tradition, Chodaganga Dev (ruler of puri) created 24 families of Karanas to preserve the temple records at Jagannath temple, Puri. Some of them were Rajputs. Others were Brahmins.
These days some follow brahmin gotra system. Some follow kshatriya gotra system. Karanas have the status of second highest caste after brahmins in orissa.
